This week we introduced formal rhetorical devices and began our American Lit Unit.
We read several speeches: Edwards' "Sinners in The Hands of An Angry God", Henry's "Speech to the Virginia Convention, "and Douglass's "What to the Negro is the Fourth of July." Students looked for uses of rhetorical strategies and devices in these pieces and compared and contrasted the rhetoric used in Henry and Douglass. They also wrote their first rhetorical precis.
