Tomorrow, Wed. 4/29, we will have a zoom meeting to go over some specifics for the AP Exam. I will send out the info over Edmodo and on Remind. I am also putting together a one-stop folder for review materials and notes you may use on the exam. It will be ready by tomorrow morning. We will look at a couple of things in the folder during our meeting that will help you on the exam . Please let me know if you have any issues getting into the folder when I post it. See everyone tomorrow. This week we are going to focus on paragraph development.
With a 40 minute time limit it is imperative that you write strong analysis paragraphs. First, watch the "Developing a Paragraph" video from college board. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hI9TT-kKtQs&list=PL5T4HLD7jkq1KyntIccZhgMDQg_eyh4gu&index=17 Then watch the following speech and complete the annotation chart for the attached prompt. https://jamesclear.com/great-speeches/failures-of-kindness-by-george-saunders saunder_prompt.docx rhetorical_analysis_checklist.docx We will go over this on Thursday for our Zoom, so post your sample paragraph for the prompt to the google drive. You only need to write a thesis and a body paragraph. Zoom info for tomorrow is on Edmodo.
We will meet at 11:30 if the weather isn't too bad to go over rhetoric in "Letter From a Birmingham Jail." We will be focusing on Tone, Allusions, The Syntax in question 5, and how these relate to the idea of What he does and Why for body paragraphs. We can look at some thesis sentences too if you like. Students will need access to their email or College Board account to take the 2020 AP Exams. You can help ensure that your students have access in the following ways:
1. Students should check the email address they used to create their account on myap.collegeboard.org; students should regularly check this email address for the most recent information about their AP Exams. 2. Students should verify their College Board account at myap.collegeboard.org by clicking on their profile at the top right-hand corner of the page, and going to Account Settings. Students should scroll down to verify their information and confirm that their email address is the one to which they'd like to receive the e-ticket to take their AP Exams. If it's not the correct email, they can update it to an email they check regularly by clicking Update. On AP Classroom I have posted a timed essay prompt for you to PRACTICE.
This is not a grade although I will give feedback to those who complete the essay. It is timed. You will only have 60 minutes to complete the assignment so don't start until you can finish in one sitting. There is no deadline for the assignment. I will post one a week until the assignment, gradually reducing the time. Again the hardest part of the test is the time limit, so it is important that you work on speed. Don't try to write a "perfect" essay. This will be a rough draft. Focus on a strong thesis and two-three solid analysis paragraph. Here is a Cheat Sheet to help you organize and practice your timing. It is set up for the way the exam will be structured. ra_cheat_sheet_great.docx You were also supposed to have received an email from college board with info about the exam. Let me know ASAP if you did not receive that email. Be Safe! FBelow is a list of you tube videos College Board has produced for AP Lang. They are meant to help you review for the exam. However, some are not geared toward the Rhetorical Analysis essay, so may not be be helpful for preparing for the test.
The ones that are currently posted that are I think are essential are videos: 1, 4, 5, 11, 12, 16, and 17. You may watch 13, 14, and 15 if you struggle with intros and conclusions, although I think most of you are pretty comfortable with the rhetorical precis model we have used. The rest have not been posted but look promising. As an aside, I know these are fairly long. If you start watching and realize that you already know the information then you are in good shape. ap_lang_youtube_links.docx This is link to a much shorter lesson on writing the rhetorical analysis essay by a fellow named Timm Freitas. He's kind of a big deal among lang teachers. A ton of material that is out there has been "borrowed" from him. I know I have learned a lot from him. He has cool tats as well. Definitely worth a look. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUFpwUOZmuc We will have a zoom at 11:30 tomorrow to go over the RA essay we did before the quarantine.
