This week we will write our first analysis essay. Rough Drafts will be written Tuesday and we will revise on Wednesday. Final drafts will be due Thursday.
Students will be assigned their Parallel Reading text this week. I will be assigning due dates for reading check by Wednesday. This week we will be working on analyzing MLK's "Letter From a Birmingham Jail"
We will be looking at how writer's use rhetorical choices and strategies to achieve a purpose in a text. Students will read the letter and plan and write a Rhetorical Analysis of the text. We will also create a SPACECAT one pager for the letter. Monday we wrote our timed Argument essay in class. Students who were absent will need to sign up for a Hawk Hour to make up the essay.
We had no school on Tuesday. We introduced the Rhetorical Analysis essay on Wednesday and explored how to break down and analyse a passage using SPACECAT and the rhetorical triangle. We used the ARCH method to create thesis statements for the essay. This week we wrapped up our argument unit by looking at ways to qualify and argument and exploring how to properly write counter-arguments and rebuttals.
We examined different prompts, and in groups wrote collaborative essays that used our argument approaches and either qualified the argument or used appropriate counter-argument and rebuttal. Students were given several prompts to choose from in order to prepared for our timed essay. They had to choose one and find appropriate REHUGO examples for support and write an outline. |
